A-B-O-U-T--D-E-S-I-G-N--O-F--T-H-E--S-I-T-E---------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTROL-SITE----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The part of Kiez21 which I designed is about having control, contrary to the other part of the site, where the visitors have no choice but to read and experience the- content presented to them.--------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I, on the other hand, want to give the visitors options, the possibility of-------- choosing what they will see (the first association I had with 'Kiez21' was the----- Dutch word 'kiezen', which means: 'to choose').------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, the intriguing thing about a magazine on the internet, is that you can-------- organize the content of it dynamically. So, instead of having fixed issues, which-- constitute closed wholes, like in the case of a standard paper magazine, Kiez21---- is designed to be a growing database of articles, a database the viewer can choose- to order in different ways.-------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The design of the site offers, next to the more conventional organizational-------- procedures, unorthodox ways to access the database. The visitors can, for instance, organize the database by word count (so in this case, the article with the most---- words will appear on top of the list, which comes in useful if you are searching--- for a lot of content), or by the first words of the articles.---------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When an article is selected, visitors can read a summarized version of the article. This way of presenting the content is, I think, more suitable to the (fast)-------- medium of Internet.---------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If the visitors wish to read more, they can choose to view the whole article,------ which is downloadable in a PDF format. That way, they could even compose their own- magazine, using the content provided to them by Kiez21. To make this easier, I----- have even included short instructions on the print versions of the articles: how--- to fold them, where to put a staple, et cetera.------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For me, Kiez21 is all about text and language. The design reflects this. This is--- also why I decided to make use of nothing but simple typographical elements-------- (dashes, letters and numbers)."---------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hilde Meeus------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NO-CONTROL-SITE-------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The introduction was designed to accompany the sound composition of Samuel-------- Vriezen. It mimics the process of gradual understanding and explores the----------- relationship between the form and the meaning of typographic symbols. Graphically,- it is directly inspired by concrete poetry.---------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The rest of the no control interface is a natural continuation of the-------------- terminal-screen idea from the introduction, and the user-interaction reinforces---- the feelings of sitting in front of an outdated computer."------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Maja Bialon and Srdjan Ostojic----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
