E-D-I-T-O-R-I-A-L--S-T-A-T-E-M-E-N-T----------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kiez21----------------------------------------------------------------------------- growing magazine for culture, theory and journalism-------------------------------- permanently under construction----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kiez21: growing magazine for culture, theory and journalism was launched on the---- 20th of May 2005.------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kiez21 is an initiative taken by several academics, journalists and culturally----- involved freelancers from Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels and Louvain.----------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our title Kiez21 is pronounced as '[k:its] twenty-one'. This title may cause------- some confusion - and that is exactly what it is supposed to do.-------------------- We hope it brings all sorts of associations to mind: this should demonstrate------- that Kiez21 is averse from simple answers and unambiguous interpretations.--------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Key terms in Kiez21 are interdisciplinarity, culture, cross over thought, art,----- politics, contemporary issues, and the interweaving of genres and modes of writing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kiez21 does not want to present itself as a 'young', 'hip' or 'urban' magazine.---- Our feet stand firmly on the ground, yet at the same time, we are 'up' in the arts. We are part of society, but we are also on the sidelines.-------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Because academics, journalists and artists deal with reality in a reflexive manner, conceptualising it in art and articles, designing it and thus transforming it into- something that may be a statement on reality, but never fully represents it.------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Because one cannot live in an ivory tower, but one cannot claim to indivisibly----- merge into daily reality either.--------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The design in Kiez21 reflects our fascination for the tension between form and----- content. We are striving for a functional, yet aesthetically challenging design---- - a strategy that does not treat internet as merely a free online scan of a paper-- magazine, but that makes the medium visible and tangible.-------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is why Kiez21 is working closely with authors, designers and artists.--------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ideally, every contribution to Kiez21 will have two 'faces'. We offer written------ material in PDF documents to our visitors. But we have also asked different-------- designers and artists to experiment with these articles.--------------------------- In doing so, we hope to present designers with a challenging platform to present--- their ideas, and at the same time make our readers aware of the way in which design can influence, enhance or undermine the process of communication.------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is why Kiez21 is a 'growing magazine'. Some of the contributions are finished, others are works in progress. Thought and design are never static,----------------- but always under construction.----------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is why Kiez21 is not really a magazine, in a sense, but a 'organic body of---- texts'.
